Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)

Is a maritime training topic or course designed to provide seafarers with a clear understanding of the purpose, operation, and limitations of AIS in support of safe navigation.

The training covers the principles of AIS, including how vessel information such as identity, position, course, speed, and navigational status is transmitted and received. Participants learn the correct operational use of AIS, data input requirements, interpretation of AIS information, and its integration with radar, ECDIS, and other navigational systems. Emphasis is placed on the limitations, potential errors, and security considerations of AIS, as well as its role in collision avoidance and situational awareness. Upon completion, trainees are able to use AIS effectively and responsibly in accordance with international maritime regulations and best navigational practices.
