Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)

Is a maritime training course designed to ensure that navigational officers can safely and effectively operate ECDIS at the operational level in accordance with international regulations.

The course provides comprehensive instruction on ECDIS principles, system components, chart types, and data accuracy. Training covers route planning and monitoring, safety settings, alarms and indications, chart corrections, sensor integration, and system limitations. Emphasis is placed on the practical use of ECDIS to support safe navigation, situational awareness, and compliance with the COLREGs.

Participants also learn about common operational errors, backup arrangements, and the importance of cross-checking ECDIS information with other navigational aids. Upon completion, trainees are competent in the operational use of ECDIS, contributing to safer navigation and effective bridge watchkeeping in line with international maritime standards.
